answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/07/2019 answer text <p>The Millennium Development Goal targets for clean water in sub-Saharan Africa were not met by the 2015 deadline. Between 2015 and 2018, DFID supported 17.5 million people in Africa to access clean water and/or better sanitation. For example, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, over 2.7 million people gained access to clean water with DFID’s support between 2015 and 2018. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/07/2019 answer text <p>The UK is committed to supporting refugees, the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol. We played a key role with our international partners to develop the Global Compact on Refugees, which was agreed in December last year.</p><p> </p><p>This Compact provides a framework for more predictable and equitable responsibility-sharing and more effective international cooperation in refugee responses. The UK actively engaged in its development, including through five Thematic Meetings and six Formal Consultations between Member States in Geneva over 2017 and 2018.</p><p> </p><p>The UK remains steadfastly supportive of the aims of the Compact. We remain committed to alleviating the humanitarian situation in Gaza and our assistance continues to be focused on meeting the basic needs of Gazans. To that end, DFID have recently provided £5m to UNRWA’s Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs) emergency appeal which will help UNRWA provide food aid to one million people in Gaza. Through our support to UNRWA’s programme budget, the UK also supports UNRWA’s delivery of core services, including health services and basic education, to Palestinian refugees across the Middle East, and the collection of solid waste.</p><p> </p><p>In the medium term, DFID are working to address the underlying causes of humanitarian need in Gaza through an economic development programme which aims to lift the overall standard of living in Gaza and the West Bank by increasing trade and job creation, enabling greater movement and access for people and goods, and enhancing the supply of electricity and clean water, especially in Gaza.</p> answering member printed Baroness Sugg question first answered 15/07/2019 16:20:46 answering member 4584 label Biography information for Baroness Sugg
