There are 12 intercity trains operating on the Midland Main Line that are more than 30 years old. These trains will be phased out during the next franchise. Abellio will oversee the introduction of brand-new trains capable of operating under electric or diesel power, entirely replacing the existing intercity fleet by December 2022, and introducing a modern electric express fleet between Corby and London by December 2020.
