This means a network for current and prospective electric vehicle drivers that is affordable, reliable, accessible and secure. The Road to Zero strategy includes new commitments to massively expand electric and low emission vehicle infrastructure across the country.</p><p> </p><p>Government funding and leadership, alongside private sector investment has supported the installation of more than 17,000 public chargepoints. This includes over 1,700 rapid chargepoints - one of the largest networks in Europe. Our grant schemes and our £400m public-private Charging Infrastructure Investment Fund will see thousands more electric vehicle chargepoints installed across the UK. We will consult on proposals for chargepoints to be installed with all newly built homes in England, where appropriate. Along with other measures in the Government’s Road to Zero strategy, this adds up to one of the most comprehensive support packages in the world for the transition to zero emission vehicles. Since 2010 over £240 million has been provided to fund the cleanest buses, and in February 2019 announced the winners of a £48 million scheme which will fund a further 263 zero emission buses. The Department is investing £780m in Control Period 6 to upgrade the East Coast Main Line. In conjunction with the introduction of new trains for London North Eastern Railway (LNER), additional LNER services to Edinburgh from Autumn 2019, and Transpennine Express plans to extend its Liverpool to Newcastle service to Edinburgh from December 2019, together this will improve journey times, reliability and capacity between England and Scotland. The East Coast Main Line Enhancement Programme will maximise the capacity available from the two tracks that continue to run north of Northallerton. Building on that starting point, the Northern Powerhouse Rail Strategic Outline Business Case presents proposals to increase track capacity to Newcastle.
