<p>The government believes that all schools can benefit from becoming an academy as
part of a multi-academy trust (MAT). The department does not think it is necessary
at this time to set a timescale for this ambition to be realised.</p><p>Academy conversion
remains a positive choice for many schools who are voluntarily choosing to convert
to enjoy the benefits of autonomy and working in collaboration with other schools
as part of a MAT. More than 50% of all pupils in state funded schools in England are
educated in an academy or free school. The department has been clear that maintained
schools are only required to become sponsored academies, due to educational underperformance,
if they are judged inadequate by Ofsted.</p>
