All local authority maintained schools must comply with the School Food Standards.
Academies and free schools are also required to comply with the standards via their
funding agreements, with the exception of a proportion founded between 2010 and 2014
that we expect to comply voluntarily. All food served in these schools, including
free school meals, must comply with these school food standards. The standards ensure
that food provided to pupils in school is nutritious and of high quality, promotes
good nutritional health in all pupils, protects those who are nutritionally vulnerable
and promotes good eating behaviour.

The department has not held any recent discussions
with the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on the nutritional
content of free school meals.
