answer text
The Government places high importance on research and development in the rail industry, and actively supports this through grant payments to Network Rail, the RSSB and to Innovate UK. The rail industry is currently in discussion with the Office of Rail and Road about funding to support rail research and development in the period 2019-24, as part of the £47.9 billion funding settlement announced by Government in October 2017. To realise its full benefits, research and development must be well planned, efficient and deliverable.
more like this

answer text
Delay Repay 15 (DR15) is a major improvement for passengers seeking compensation for delays and cancellations to their train services. It entitles passengers to claim compensation for delays of 15 minutes of more on all ticket types and regardless of the cause of disruption to their rail journeys.

It is Government policy that DR15 is rolled out across the rail network as Franchises come up for renewal, and four franchises (GTR, Southwestern Railway, West Midlands Trains and c2c) currently operate the scheme.

The Department for Transport is also considering introducing DR15 during the life of existing Franchises if the Department can establish that the proposals from the Train Operating Companies are affordable and represent value for money for taxpayers.
more like this

answer text
Following the Government announcement on 21 July 2017 to abolish tolls by the end of 2018 the Government has not undertaken any further modelling on the impact of abolishing the current tolls on traffic volumes in Bristol.

Previous modelling work was undertaken on the impact of removing tolls compared to the 2014 toll level, rather than comparing specifically with toll levels either when the decision to abolish tolls was made or at the end of the concession period. That modelling also covers a different time period to the option being delivered and so there will be differences from actual impacts. That modelling did show that there would be an increase in traffic as a result of abolishing the tolls and that this would result in approximately 16,000 extra trips per day either into or out of Bristol in 2022. This is equivalent to 8,000 two-way journeys per day.

Highways England are conducting modelling work to look at the impacts of moving from the current level of tolls to no tolls at the end of the year.

answer text
The department does not hold figures for the exact number of breaches, but data from the Ministry of Justice shows that there were 200 prosecutions in 2017 for the offence “Pedal cycle – Riding on footpath”. However, this may not cover all incidents that breached rule 64 of the Highway Code. The figures presented relate to defendants for whom these offences were the principal offences for which they were dealt with. When a defendant has been found guilty of two or more offences it is the offence for which the heaviest penalty is imposed. Where the same disposal is imposed for two or more offences, the offence selected is the offence for which the statutory maximum penalty is the most severe.
more like this

answer text
The cost of advertising connected with brand awareness and the launch of London North Eastern Railway (LNER) was approximately £936,000, which includes print, radio and digital marketing. This activity was critical to ensure that customers were aware that the change from Virgin Trains East Coast to LNER would not involve any disruption to services and that the change did not lead to any loss of revenue. This level of marketing spend is comparable with that of other normal intercity train operators.
more like this
