Public authorities will need to comply with the fundamental principles relating to
processing of of personal data under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
That includes ensuring that personal data is processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent
manner. The GDPR strengthens the rights of data subjects in several key areas. For
example, they will be able to access their data more quickly than provided for by
the current law. Public authorities will also need to appoint a 'data protection officer'
to inform and advise the organisation on compliance with the GDPR, subject to the
remaining stages in the House of Commons and House of Lords.
