answer text
The recently published Mendoza Review of museums in England found that public funding to museums and galleries in England has totalled over £8.4 billion in the past decade. Museums receive public funding from a variety of sources, including Arts Council England (ACE), Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), local authorities and others, as well as benefiting from a range of tax reliefs and grants. It is therefore not possible to provide a comprehensive breakdown of public funding for museums in the region.

Arts Council England, the funding body with responsibility for museums, announced its 2018-2022 National Portfolio Organisations funding in summer 2017. Ten museums bodies will be funded in the West Midlands, with five receiving ongoing core funding for the first time. Overall, the West Midlands will receive £16 Million between 2018 and 2022, an increase of 82% from the 2015-18 funding round.

Culture Coventry is one of the newly-funded organisations and will receive £1.6 Million over four years, including in Coventry’s UK City of Culture year 2021, to support Coventry Transport Museum and the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum. West Midlands museums have also benefited from Heritage Lottery Funding, for example £9.8 Million announced in summer 2017 for the Black Country Living Museum, and £3 Million to support Coventry projects for UK City of Culture.
