answer text

The Government set out its ambition for a reformed prison estate in the November 2016 Prison Safety and Reform White Paper. Our reforms will close down ageing and ineffective prisons and replace them with buildings fit for today’s demands. Our new prison estate will create the physical conditions for Governors to achieve better educational, training and rehabilitation outcomes. We have concluded the marketing exercise for the sale of the former HM Prison and Young Offender Institution Holloway site and are currently evaluating the bids received. As part of the evaluation, the Ministry of Justice will assess the feasibility of redevelopment schemes proposed by bidders. This will include whether they comply with the London Borough of Islington’s (LBI) affordable housing and other planning requirements and whether the purchaser has sufficient funds to undertake the development. The MoJ will also consider the proposed timetable for development and the track record of the developers in undertaking developments on time.

We expect to make an announcement about the successful bidder in the Spring of 2018. At this stage in the process the number of bids received is commercially sensitive.
